Getting Through...

Getting through to students is so hard to do, especially when we as teacher candidates come in, halfway through a semester and basically take over the class until the end of the semester. I know that if I was a student, it would be way too difficult for me to have someone come in and teach. With that said, as a teacher candidate, it has been difficult to get through to a few students of mine. Initially, a few of these students were not very receptive to it because I was new to the classroom. I completely understood how they felt and tried to get through to them. Within a few days, most of the students in the class were receptive and responding to me as the teacher. They started seeing me as the teacher and as the head of the class. Throughout the semester, though, there were a few kids that still didn't see me as the head teacher. It was difficult and depressing sometimes because those students were the ones who tried to make a big deal out of a small thing. They would argue with me sometimes and just give me attitude all around. It was very difficult and sometimes I would feel defeated at the end of the day. My teacher kept reassuring me that it was okay and that there will always be students that will be resistant towards me no matter what I do. Today was the first day where I had a good conversation with one of the students. It was at the end of the period and I just started talking to one student about his goals and future career. That conversation led to what sports he watches and what were his favorite teams. It was a good experience for me because I realized that sometimes it just takes time for students to come around, sometimes longer than other students.
