Using Facebook and Twitter as a Teaching Tool? Pros and Cons

To be honest, I had never thought about using Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites as a personal learning network. Part of the reason is that it's because of what I read on the internet about teachers getting caught about what they post on their Facebook pages about how much they don't like their students, make fun of them, etc...Personally, I would never post anything like that about my students but I do understand that it is their way of relieving stress from the teaching job. But honestly, this isn't the healthiest way to do so. So many articles I read are about how teachers get caught and they have to resign their posts all because they didn't think beforehand about what they were saying or typing. It is one thing to think it but another to say it. On top of that, students' parents also have Facebook and Twitter and if we post things about students, I'm pretty sure that parents will see those things and they are going to complain to the administration. For me personally, I would never use social media sites as an educational tool.

But on the other side, I see the good things about using social media sites as a learning tool. Students nowadays are becoming more and more influenced by what they see on Facebook and Twitter. Teachers can use these resources as supplemental tools when they teach to find out more about students. For example on Facebook, a teacher can create a class page where the teacher can post on main ideas of what the class had learned and homework assignments.

In conclusion, I just think that teachers need to be very careful and use heavy caution when using social media and networking sites.
